Hello Parents, Staff and Community Members,

Weekly updates will be posted here: East Union Superintendent's Notes starting 1/20/17

EU Update 01-14-17

Winterfest week will come to a conclusion this evening with the Winter Formal. It’s been a fun first week to the second semester with a variety of activities, dress up days and a great turnout for Pack the Gym night on Friday night.

Fine Arts

It was great to have the Pep Band as a part of Pack the Gym night Friday. I think having a Pep Band in the gym adds to the atmosphere and the home advantage that we want the “Eagles Nest” to be. Thanks to Mr. Clark and the kids for doing this and I hope to see the Pep Band more in the future.

Facility

As I look at our facility and begin to think about needs and projects that could/should be done I’ve been developing a priority list. First we have to address any safety concerns and luckily there really aren’t any of those. Then we have to look at “wear and tear” type items and there are several of those type of things that need to be done to the secondary structure. That is not surprising due to the age of our facility. Luckily we have the ability to make improvements and repairs without affecting our general operating fund by using SAVE.

Communications

Next week is Board meeting week. The Board will meet on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the Secondary Library. The agenda is relatively light and you can view it through the EUCSD Board Materials site.

My second superintendent’s coffee was again sparsely attended. I will continue to offer these monthly throughout the remainder of the year and while I know the time of the day is hard for parents, I’m going to continue the format at a consistent time. Next month I’m trying to find a spot in Arispe to hold the meeting. When I get that firmed up I will get the word out where we will be.

Enrollment

This is a quick look at where our current students served numbers are. Since we are just starting second semester we have picked up a few students new to EU. It’s great to meet these kids and their parents and see how our students welcome them to the EU family.

Activities

Pack the Gym night was a great positive experience for several different EU groups. Boys and girls basketball both were successful which is always helpful to keep things positive in the gym. The Middle School Dance squad performed for the first time this year, the Minigizers joined the Energizers to perform, we introduced the Afton Rec basketball teams and the Boosters put on a good spread of supper options. It’s always fun to see the young ones faces as they get to be on the floor and hear the crowd cheering for them.

We finished off the week with the EU Duals today. We lost a team from the lineup so we had 4 dual matches today rather than 5. The boys wrestled well, winning all 4 duals & outscoring our opponents 205 - 91.

EU Update 01-06-17

I hope the new year is treating you well thus far. We’ve completed the first week back from break and today marks the end of the first semester! It’s hard to believe the year is half over. The next few months are busy with preparing for ending this school year and starting the next, we will keep PLENTY busy!

Fine Arts

We’re in between events here, but I can confirm that the spring musical will be the “Sound of Music”. I’m sure the kids will do a great job, it’s a favorite of mine so I’ll be looking forward to the performance later this spring!

Facility

We continue to deal with HVAC issues throughout the facility, and our primary focus continues to be the Elementary loop. Without going into too many details there have been several elementary rooms that have been cold this last week and we found that the temperature of the fluid in the loop was not at a level that would promote heating. That issue has been addressed and temperatures in the classrooms are coming up. It’s becoming more clear that the controls of the system are leading to many of the issues, and we’re working with the vendors to get this fixed.

The commons facelift will continue with new records boards being installed next week in time for “Pack the Gym” night next Friday. I’ve worked with our coaching staff to make sure the records we have on the boards are updated and accurate as far as we can tell. We received 4 of them this week and they look GREAT! Mr. Nelson will be installing these along the south wall above where the concessions and food service doors are. Each sport (with a couple of exceptions) will have their own board that measures 3’ x 4’ so they will take up a good deal of that empty space.

ABM (night cleaning crew) has gone through a little bit of personnel change over, and I will say I think it has been for the better. Complaints about rooms not getting cleaned are down since the middle of December and I’ve noticed a few things (like dusting lockers) have been getting done on a consistent basis. I continue to communicate with their management team in the hopes of making the arrangement better going forward.

Communications

I’ll be hosting my second Superintendent’s Coffee a week from today, 1/13/17, at the Community Center in Lorimor. We’re set up to have coffee and snacks from 10 - 12 and I hope there will be a few more that join the conversation. I’m going to keep the time consistent for the moment. I’m hoping to find a location in Arispe for February. These are great opportunities to learn from the community in an informal manner...and also give them a more personal way to ask their questions rather than coming to a board meeting.

Enrollment

This is a quick look at where our current students served numbers are. When you look at the two and try to compare, compare the 16-17 school year number with the previous grade in the 15-16 school year. For example, this year our 1st grade has 23 students as of day 88, last year (15-16) KG had 33 students. This means that compared to last year on this date, there are 10 less students in 1st grade then there were. Overall, we’re serving 3 more students overall than last year.

UPDATE - Kindergarten may not have been the best choice in grades to use. We have a Junior Kindergarten program that adds 8-10 kids to our Kindergarten number each year. This program gives some kids who need it an extra year to mature and develop to set them up for success when they enter the regular Kindergarten program. Kids in this program will be enrolled in Kindergarten the following year rather than attending 1st grade. The rest of the explanation holds as correct, but to say we dropped 10 students from Kindergarten to First grade this year wouldn't be completely accurate.

Activities

Winter sports are in full swing! There will be two tough opponents for our teams tonight vs. Central Decatur and our Wrestlers are off to compete at Winterset in the morning. The Winterset meet is a tough meet with a lot of really good wrestlers competing. Next week we have a full schedule of games throughout the week and we top it off with “Pack the Gym” night next Friday night.
